回覆 (130): Knowledge is Power lor! |
For those who are standing in cross road not sure of getting a copy. The fourth edition has fewer circuit than the previous three editions. In this latest edition, it seems unavoidable for him not to get into the slightly more technical anlysis and equations to describe how a valve amp actually work.
The book is circle around valve and its application in audio amplication but he is not blindly committed to anything valve. i.e, he doesnt like valve regulator, he is more into push pull than SE. He doesnt like mercury recitifier. This one is not good news lor!
If you are a diyer or want to get into diy. This is a good book for you. If you are no diyer. Its a good book too. Simply because some of the topics can save million of dollars from buying the wrong stuff.
Someone can correct me. OK. Audio highhand may not find it interesting to read if you are completely against valve amp!

小師妹: Oh! 小師兄呀, Up and below is OK. Front and back is not OK for me.
小師兄: That's fine with me. I can live with that.
小師妹: You sure? There seems to be a growing trend that you guys just love the front and back.
小師兄: I mean, the only real difference is that the front is more open and spacious and the back is always a little bit more......................you know, more depth!
小師妹: Oh! 小師兄呀, I like 呀! You always give me so much more.
小師兄: So, how about this now? I have just pushed in another inch?
小師妹: Oh Oh! Almost la! I can feel it la. Its coming so much stronger. I like呀. Can you try just a little harder please?
小師兄: No more, no more. I think I am done la.
小師兄: If I push the speaker in a little further, you will lose that sound stage. You know, the front and back effect you longing for. And the below, I mean the bass note and the up, I mean the treble should be well extended and filling up the entire listening room lor.
小師妹: OK! OK! Why you only have Hi Fi in your mind. So boring lor!

Need not to say more about the author la! Bought from bay watch and arrived on my desk yesteday from UK post. Watch out the pricing difference between sellers. You shouldnt need to pay more than 40 pounds for a paperback copy. Some sellers are asking for 80+ pounds.
In its fourth edition. Total 700 pages. Nice new topic includes a Chapter on Dynamic Range: Distortion and Noise. A balanced Hybrid RIAA circuit. And finally, a short Chapter on SE amp.

Icefox,
Brother Wei's big massive horns remind me of 大煉鋼, all he need are some red flags and "big letter poster" to move the room's atmosphere from the 1950s to 1970s :D
Brother Keung & Horn King is very scientific, with audio analyzer to set up their systems. |

Much appreciated for the invite. Yes, i will be joining in the morning. As for any further activities after lunch. I need approval from my CEO. Its kind of grey and miserable outside, not the best time to send application.

Layout of the new crossover looks reasonable & great. Many times layout of the original one may look crappy
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Thats encouraging. Danke!
No to my surprise! The original layout was rather ok but the component quality wasn't very attractive lor. Very terrible indeed! However messy it may look, the layout wasnt crappy at all. The original layout have all the coils at 90 degree crossing. No coils were parallel to each other. It does look a bit messy but thats the whole point. Is to avoid magnetic interference. And even the caps were at 90 degree crossing.

Layout of the new crossover looks reasonable & great. Many times layout of the original one may look crappy, but sometimes it's crappy layout, components here & there without any sense that create magic. Just in case, the new crossover let you down, try rearrange the components to mimic that of the crappy original. |

speaker placement is the damn thing that makes or breaks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am completely empty when it comes to room acoustic and speaker placement. In fact, what i am doing now with the Leak 3090 crossover is as I see it, a new opening chapter for me learn and play around on how to max out a pair of large domestic multi units speakers in an average size den.
Remember we talked about me bringing my AVO over. Cant wait for the grand visit.

For example, when you've finally clocked the best position for your speakers, everything has to be re-started from square one.

The original caps uf were mostly exceed 50% than their design values. No way i can trust them to do their jobs anymore. The rebuild i am having is based on a new platform and i am keeping the original one for later comparsion. At least i am doing one thing not incorrect so far, right?
Its such a risky business to fiddle around with crossover. Oh, my god! What am I doing??? You know this TV adv from a lady cosmetic brand "FANCL" . Remember their tag line - "LESS IS MORE". Thats how i feel about this crossover rebuild right now.
The trouble is I am just not too sure if I am doing too less or too more. I hate speaker designers. They earn the most in dollar and offer the less in responsiblity and improvement. |

When you work on crossovers, it's good practice to keep the original intact. Chances are that you may find the original better when your audio feat improves.

I am almost 200% sure that is NOT the path for me. Being a lazy bastard, it's just way too much work with highly questionable returns.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You are not alone, my friend!
I am 20000% certain that electronic crossover and big DIY multi-horns never can within my knowledge of understanding.
"Its scary when you have to deal with something you don't understand"
Speaking of crossover, I am working on a complete crossover rebuild for my Leak 3090. Its almost done now. And to be honest, I can assure you that its no fun at all. Its one of the worst soldering expereience i ever had in my entire DIY audio life. Its utterly boring. Its very expensive. Its time consuming. Once done, its hidden away and even if it doesnt, it aint sexy to look at. And is almost impossible to conduct any scientific measures at my little den.
All new coil mH and cap values were indentical to the original design. I even measured the coil resistance to make sure not much ohms deviation to the originals. Nothing too fancy or exotic. Just Solen mult-strand coil and caps. All wiring were Supra multi-strand. No silver wiring or alien space ship materials. No WBT la and no flat wire coil lor! A coil is a coil, why introduce a capacitor within!
Share with you more on LISTENING test in about a week. And do give me a shout if you have something to share! |

this is a hobby. the worse sound you get the more fun you will have since you will start all over again and again and again.
_____
This is a very thought-provoking statement indeed.
For the sake of 搞,looks no further multi-way, multi-driver, electronic crossover system is the way to go. However, as a key take away for this trip, I am almost 200% sure that is NOT the path for me. Being a lazy bastard, it's just way too much work with highly questionable returns.
On that respect, I walked away with great curiosity on the magic behind the Legacy's loudspeakers design. Being a 4 ways, multi-driver speaker system, it managed to behave extremely power efficient. This system is capable of being driven by a 10W parallel SE 300B amplification without sounding like energy deficient, for a tiny bit, even on large and complex passage.
p.s. For those who would be interested in seeing more photos of the trip, you can use the link below where you could find some more professional photographic inputs from another teammates. My photography sucks and I am just too lazy in posting. |

The room itself??? Well..... I don't know
_________________________________
The purpose of this design, progressive width borrowed from the Japanese, is to get rid of room resonances, but I'll bet that the designer must have the vision of making this big room a huge horn as well.
A good trial and error, nevertheless.

and the people look kind of tiny comparing to the enclosure.
Actually I am curious of the huge amount of cabniet space above the treble unit which press the bass units down almost sitting on the floor. Am I correct to say that sound travel through air, not concrete, right?
