Morning Gentlemen,

Recently came across some exceptional quality plywood from Indonesia at incredible price. A great opportunity for any DIYer looking to plan ahead for their next project. Here's the info:

Indonesian mahogany ply: 1/2"- 3/4 " x 4' x 8' - $200 / per sheet

Supplier located in Chai Wan, the shop has a very nice industrial table saw ( looks like a full size Delta or Rockwell with extended guide, cuts wood like butter!) The shop owner charge extra for each cut (around $10-20 / per cut).

A young man called Ron wanted to buy his new girlfriend a Christmas present, As they hadn’t been seeing each other for very long, he decided after careful consideration, that a pair of gloves would strike the right note. Not too romantic and not too personal.

He went with his girlfriend"s sister to Harrods and bought a dainty pair of white fur lined gloves. The sister bought her self a pair of knickers at the same time. During the wrapping the shop assistant mixed up the two items, the sister got the gloves and Ron got the knickers. Without checking Ron got home and gift wrapped the package and sent it with the following letter:-

Dear Sasha,

I chose these because I've noticed that you are not wearing any when we go out in the evenings. If it had not been for your sister I would have chosen the long ones with buttons, but she wears shorter ones which are easier to remove. These are a very delicate shade, but the lady in the shop showed me the pair she had been wearing for the past three weeks and they were hardly soiled at all. I had her try yours on for me and she looked really smart in them, even though they were a little bit tight on her.

She also said that her pair rubs her ring which helps keep it clean and shiny. In fact she hasn't needed to wash it since she began wearing them. I wish I was there to put them on you for the first time, as no doubt many other hands will touch them before I have a chance to see you again. When you take them off remember to blow into them a little bit because they will be naturally a little bit damp from wearing. Just think how many times my lips will kiss them during the coming year.

I hope you will wear them for me on Friday night.

All my love

Ron xxx

P.S The latest style is to wear them folded down with a little bit of fur showing.

My big sharing - New Year resolution

MUST DO:
Complete my PPP 811-10 project and send to high hands to show off what triode Class A power is all about.

Meet a lot of OLs for many evening drinks and make sure to get so drunk each time that I could not remember a thing about "What I did last night".

Get rid of the unwanted boom boom bass of my Lowther.

Have my first ever linear tracking Terminator set up on a lovely looking turntable.

Dont let Mrs bobui find out my second point.

MUST NOT DO:
Make unfriendly, silly and not audio related converstation at 1PK.

Eat too less Prime Ribs.

Just blow water but no music.

Just music but no blow water.

Meet a lot of OLs for many drinks but only myself got so drunk each time that she got to remember all that "I did last night".

More Christmas Present - My very first with a straight.........
------------------------------------------------------------

A single photo just won't do justice, well unless 1PK can offer 3D display! You really has to see it to beleive it. Its so well construct and solid build like a tank. i wasn never a true follower to linear tracking arm until the very moment arrived when i got the chance to unpack the Terminator from a friend hand delivery two weeks back.

Its such a smart design to seperate the vertical movement of the arm from horizontal mechanic where the vertical is rest on two points bearings similar to the Morch UP6. Only the horizontal movement is managed by the air bearing. To me, this so so much better than "Most" other linear tracking arms i have seen.

Now i have my small Christmas present, a HK$1,500 DAC, a mid size present also with this Terminator. Perhaps, I should be talking to wife about a matching turntable lor!

Actually, friends here should know I always have odd/bad taste. I only like old dacs from the 90s. Modern dacs usually have higher resolution but somehow I find too high resolution can be a distraction.

Another disclaimer - I like slightly blurry sound and sometimes extreme transparency can drive me crazy....

This is also why I am semi-deaf.

Thanks for your kind words, BenYC! Would be kind of special and a good laugh to have a million dollar DAC shootout amongst some high hands who have seen and experience the progress from 15 to 24 bits. Sure you know what i mean.

Guess what? HKD1,500 to me is already a huge amount la for a digital stuff. Sorry for being offensive to true digital follower here. See how arrogant bobui is! I am so ancient lor!

Great DAC. 1541 cannot go wrong.

Btw, spending millions may not get a better sounding dac. You need to spend much much less in order to find a DAC that can beat it. ;-)

My little Christmas present! A mere HK$1,500.- buy me a TDA1541 single crown dac with seperate transformers for digital and analogue. No op amp or IC expect for the servo control, only discrete components in the amplication. Too cheap for you? Good enough for me lor! Is an arcam black box.

Out of phase - I had it checked with the Hi Fi News record. It was in phase, no problem

Feedback - On the main push pull amp, I had overall negative feedback of roughly 12 db. A real silly mistake! There was no negative feedback in the PX25SE amp, thats probably why it did sound more neutral to most.

Speaker positioning - yes, I have them pulled out 2 inches forward into the room on Sunday and obvious improvement already.

Next thing in my check list is to take out the front black cloth.

And then, may be another party! Oh, a must to have, Derek2A3 phono.

My humble opinion is the problem may not be with the room but the speakers. The room is of decent size, with the right shape and properly furnished. We all know approximately how such room sounds. Misplacement of the speakers might have caused mid bass booming, deep bass deficiency and blur imaging, but not the obvious boxiness of the speakers. My first impression is the speaker sounds alright in mono, once in stereo the boxiness becomes prominent. At lower volume the speakers sounded nebulous and arid. Only in higher volume when direct sound is sufficient that there are details and dynamic. Though it might sound ridiculous, but I will certainly check whether the speakers are connected out of phase internally.

i thought it has to do with the frequency response of most lowther drivers. there is a significant peak at 5k-7k. don't believe me. measure it yourself^-^

The famous Lowther Shout ! this is the first wave to hit the back board behind the driver. In the past I have used like a carpet damping material which you can buy in Sham Shui Po. The material is alike a light wool which people use to stick onto those boom bass boxes for cars. Find the lightest and least dense version and it works very well.

Or course you could move into the front horn way like me and have no box colouration to worry about 8^)

To get rid of the boxy boominess, I suspect what needs be done is to have the Lowthers drawn further away from the room corners.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks and yes, I was thinking along the same line also. Pull the speakers out into the room. Blinds to cover up the windows and back to basic on the amp with zero negative feedback.

Icefox commented that the sound he remember from his last visit almost 8 years back was more appealing to him. Back then, I had an 8W SE amp with a more simple design phono. I did have the feeling that my listening habit has got into a wrong turn sometimes in the last few years probably because of my over worried of the shout to your face Lowther sound. Look to me that it was bit over done and need to losen up!

I am very used to the "shout at you" from my lovely Lowther, so please feel free to scream at me if you have any suggestions. Thats what freinds for!

Jokes aside, bobui has a room whose potential is in fact pretty above average. It's a good sized rectangle with one end open to the rest of the house which helps to dissipate excessive energy.

To get rid of the boxy boominess, I suspect what needs be done is to have the Lowthers drawn further away from the room corners. By so doing, the stage width may also be extended considerably. And to enhance the focus of voices or instruments, some more upholstery, paintings, drapes, blinds or the like would have the reflections tamed easily.

To achieve better symmetry for a more balanced sound, it pays to have the speakers positioned at equal distances from the side walls (now the left speaker is closer to the side wall than does the right one). Side walls are imperative to propagate low frequencies as well as their extension.

Just my 5 cents, HK.
