Have been listening to these newly completed amps for about 20 hours.

A full report with more photos and testing results can be found here : http://hk.myblog.yahoo.com/jw!aDpjOTKGE0Xz_lhz9EEe9A--

In case you would like to make any comments, please put it it here as I go there no more than once a year.

Special thanks again to mdlover who did the spectrum test for me.

What amp did you use to drive the Leak 3090?
________

We start with the Parasound A21 with some insane bass guitar and Jazz piano music to run things in. The presentation is very decent, good transient response, never short of sustainable low and deep bass. Then we change gear to the EAR 549, more elastic bass with authority.

The high was very crispy and smooth as it has a true ribbon (short) tweeter. It projects a good 3D sound stage with load of inner details and air around instruments.

May be because of the speaker cable I use (Kimber 8TC), it's a little tense for classical music but for Jazz and Pop, quite 過癮!! I have never ever had so much bass at my den @@!!!

revealing to mate it with Leak's own 12.1.
-----------------------------------------------------------

Oh yes, sure, why not for a family reunion. I am sure the Leak 12.1 would bring out the best of Leak 3090 or any sandwich speakers from Leak. Reason being the "sandwiches" are very light and fast which should compliment well with the not so hard kicking sound of valve amps.

Oh, a family photo is the warmest! What more could we ask for in life!

What best to do on a hot summer day when your wife is not in HK and you are on annual leave? ............................Thats right, fiddle around with your 4 inches, 6 inches, 15 inches. Yes, you got it. Finishing what was left behind from my last visit and work my way up again. Yesterday, I felt like I was the most lucky man with the helping hand from icefox!

We took out the 4 and 6 inches drivers in the upper cabinet of the Leak 3090 and rewire, solder and clean up a few lose ends. And the Leak sandwich speakers can now live up to its reputation once again. No more off balance between the two channels and in the listening test, icefox even had the volume on reaching 2'clock playing Bob James, cucumber track 8 and another mad drum CD i have zero idea what it is except it was brutal and mad. Not a problem with the Leak 3090 la.

Looking forward to hearing your babe.

Thanks for your kind words. I only hope I won't disappoint the many high hands here and make them travel all the way just to listen to Lowther on a single connected system.

This system may appear to die hard valve guys who wants to be able to conduct fair comparsion with different valves rather than just different brands or makes. If this doesnt ring your bell, then may be my several turntables set up could interest you. how about my cooking?

Here is the last photo. The main unit which some of you may have seen it before. There is a switch for 10db feedback or non. A swtich for DHT or indirect heat valves. A swtich for triode or pentode/Tetrode. Auto bias variable resistors range from 200ohms to 1,5K. Enough for nearly all valves except the transmitting family such as 845 or 811.

Because the power supply and main circuit stay the same. You can truely compare the sound of different valves or even different output transformers.

The rear end of the power supply. See the swtiches and the 6 little holes. thats for adjusting Faliment voltage.

The power supply also has a build in delay swtich. When main power swtich on, B+/HT voltage will delay for 3 minutes to protect precious DHT valves such as the PX25s, CX350 and of course, the 300Bs. The square shape light swtich allow you to manage the HT delay in manual as you wish.

Since I live so far away from civilisation, here I can post more photos of my current set up. So you know what you can expect for a visit at my den I eventually want to set up soon fro high hand friends and Dr's.

Sometimes, "What you see is what you get".

Look like a transistor amp, may be 50Watts or so! No sorry to have disappointed you. Its the dual mono power supply for my universial valve Push Pull power amp. Closer to you are two C-core transformers in horizontal and then further down the middle are two Gardener C-core chokes, The circuit boards in upright positions near the rear are 6 faliment regulators circuits meaning each output valves can have seperate faliment DC supply. The actual regulators are located on the two heat sinks on both sides.

HT/B+ Voltage selection swtiches are located at the outside rear, option range from 250V to 500V and faliment voltage range from 2 to 7.5V.

The main unit also allow to plug in different output transformers to mate with valves impedance and output power rating. Currently I can offer 6 transformers to choose from. Lowest 3.5K to highest 9k, Partridge, Sansui, Luxman, Sowter, Tango, UTC, Leak...

So, if any of you have quad set of valves you want to test sound and make comparsion. All you need is to bring them over and a few clicks at the rear of the power supply is all that is needed.

For instance, if you want to compare let say, PX4 vs 2A3 or 300B vs PX25 or 10Y vs 45. Easy, no soldering needed at all. How about 6V6 vs KT63? Its fun!

I dont have many and i know nothing about mono. May be eight to ten 78's and twenty 33 1/3 mono. Fo instance, some guys told me the Annie Fischer below is very hard to get! Serious, thats not really what I care! All my mono are Classical and mostly paino because thats what i listen all the time. I really is a new comer to mono. Yes, I am planning to go a little deeper with what mono can offer. I am reading books and learning!

The mono project is interesting, but not many people listen to 78's. The golden age of MONO was the introduction of the microgroove where a .7mil stylus could be used which is the industry standard for stereo today as well. I believe this introduction was the same time as Stereo birth and RIAA in 1958. So to be honest, if you listen to Mono with microgroove from 1957 it is unlikely you need to tinker the sweeps too much and especially the curve for 78's is more important - bobui are you a 78 listener ?

Two seperate settings for the 318 time constant and treble ed-emphasis. Run on a 6SL7 and hald 6SN7 or 6J5 per channel. There is also a 1590uf bass cut switch.

Show you guys the chassis later!

Happy Day! Thesse came through the post today. Just look at the sizes compare with an Original GEC KT88.

The larger transformers seconday is 520V max and into DC would be roughly 700DCV. The smaller size two are for LT left and right.

64 6550s plus 36 small signal tubes!
------------------------------------------------------
Thats a lot of 6550sssssssssssss. Triode or tetorde connected, 64 X 30W gives you 1,920W already. Plus let say 3ma each section of what ever 5751 or 12AU7, 5965 etc. Together with transformer loss. Idle vs. max in AB1 operation, faliment current etc. You are talking no less than 3,000Watts.

(What i didnt break down earlier is that each 6550 or KT88 consume around 10W of power for faliment, ah! ). Each 6550 or KT88 actually consume 40W of power total! Yes, excatly equal to a 40W 220ac light bulb in terms of heat disspate.

So, just for all the power amps, roughly 3,000Watts divided by 220ac. Thats roughly 14A continous plus.

What more scary is that some manufactuers actually run their design to full or near full on the KT88 or 6550 ORGINAL desgin spec meaning roughly 45W exclude faliment power. Thats another 10% on top on the above calculation.

14A is surely not enough la. and the whole system including preamp, the ESL57, turntables, corssover, etc.
