most cheap meters can do the job except when measureing low ac voltage. most cheap and not cheap ones just fail. i have two chinese Uni-T top end models. both can't compare with my old fluke 87.

E-Son,
Fluke 233 does not strike me as being particular versatile for audiofile applications. You can get away with a much cheaper multi-meter or spend a little more and buy something significantly better.

this is very cute. if you don't have any meter and want a reference, this is good. i was tempted for a shiwle but i simply have too many meters.

Bro. E,

Be remind the minimum order is HKD200 from Farnell, then you can enjoy the delivery FOC. While there is no minimum charge if you order fro RS.

Any points to note or tricks ordering from Fanell? Do they offer FOC delivery like RS? There is some stuff that I want to order from them.

I need 1K and 2.7K. I don't know the power rating. It is not shown on the body of the resistor. Judging from its size, may be 10W.

Does any body know where I can find this type of resistor, locally or any part in the world? Wah Fai got some similar ones which they call RS resistors but their size is too small for my use. What I am looking for are of about 3.3 cm in length.

Thanks in advance.

>>>HUGH sound from HUGH horn and hugh drivers. The speakers are definitely the BIGGEST AND TALLEST I have touched and listened. True theatre sound. Bass was thundering and roaring when called for. Vocal is full of " 中氣", truely intoxicating in this aspect. Horn afterall!

I like this !!

I visited member Gas Wong's nice home in Yuen Long last night, and had the chance to listen to his HUGH (!!!!!) Altec A5 clone horn based around Gauss 18"/RCA compression driver/altec multicell horn/A5 bass bin). The listening "house" (it is not really a room, but an independent house on ground built entirely and purposedly for hifi). Too many gear changing session and I could not really recall which amps were working at any particular time slot. Many people (about 20+) were sharing the same "house" with me and Gas.

A very nice piece of land and tasty interior design!!!

About the sound:

Gas openly admitts he needs more time to tune everything to its best and I will be waiting eagerly for my next visit very soon. I enjoyed the time I spent there.

And these all came from fewer than 20 watts in tube power. (845 single-end at one moment in time)

Though things are not at their best balance right now, they still show a lot of wonderful quality at things horn do best.

having said that, I realise recently it is extremely difficult for me (my ears) to go back to boxes. Once our ears have heard "no box", we always can hear the existence of box right in front of you. I definitely would sacrifice deep bass for more transparency and a better "disappearing act".

yes daiwok. If I am to build a bassbin (sealed or ported) I will try Basso woofer. All the bassbin needs to provide is quality low from 100hz and down.

Lynn Olson is spot on with his remarks which is also what I heard. However, just for the record the Bass enclosures which Vic had were made from high quality ply and had no damping material inside. My bass enclosures also have no damping inside, but mine are 32mm thick MDF. MDF does come in many forms and I am very happy with my bass, they are very much cleaner than Vic's and certainly are getting better and better.

guru Lynn Olson seems to like Bastanis a lot (I think soulsonics has posted something like this before but I wasn't sure, apology for the double posting in case):

"The truly memorable part of listening to the Bastani was the combination of wide-open spaciousness and sound that had physical impact. Usually, you get one or the other, but not both. Horns, after all, aren't known for wide-open spatial qualities, with the soundstage only rarely extending beyond the speakers. Dipoles with prosound drivers have both qualities.

What Rob Bastini brought to the table were prosound efficiencies of 97 to 99 dB/metre, instead of the audiophile efficiencies of 87 to 89 dB/metre of the Linkwitz designs, or the even lower 82 to 85 dB/metre of electrostats. I can tell you, that changes everything, combined with the insane headroom of prosound drivers.

Typical audiophile drivers start to exhibit dynamic compression from voice-coil heating at levels as low as 95 ~ 98 dB - and of course, 98 dB is nearing the danger zone for most electrostats. By contrast, prosound drivers, especially those designed for studio-monitor use, are quite happy with 115 to 125 dB. Once you get used to horn dynamics, you become very aware of just how compressed most audiophile drivers sound in comparison. Horns, unfortunately, still sound like horns, although the very best have diminished the coloration quite considerably.

Both the Linkwitz and Bastani have stunning dynamics - almost in horn territory without the colorations - and the spaciousness and 3-dimensionality of electrostatics. I can see why many Europeans are turning to open-baffle designs: they do things that never happen in conventional speaker boxes."

I have to admit the previous bass was wooly to me
-------------------
I studied briefly the cutting and installation plan of the woofer b,in, and I could not understand why there is always no absorption material of any sort placed inside the box. May be this is the cause of the wooliness. I trust using the baltic plywood is good for midbass/open baffle, but I have hardly seen any woofer bin made out of such exotic, or "live sounding" material. Perhaps MDF would be more appropriate for this application?

I placed my order for Atlas yesterday. The importer has a pair of mint demo and is able to give me a very "special" deal. I will first try the Atlas with my own 18" dipole woofer as I have the class-d and crossover anyway.

The gem of Bastanis Atlas are the "specially recipe" 12" widebander. These will be a good candidate for my second system based on a compression horn/tractrix. Matching a compresson horn with the widebanders is easier than matching it directly to any 15" woofer. The tweeters on the Atlas are a short-horn compression driver anyway.

According to Vic the owner of Trans-Fi - the new dipole bass is better than the previous bass units. I have to admit the previous bass was wooly to me, so I guess the new bass should be much cleaner. Vic is the UK distributor for the Bastanis and has a great relationship with Robert. However, they don't sell well for whatever reason as I find the speakers sound very transparent especially the mid and treble range. I saw Vic for dinner about 3 weeks ago ^__^

The woofer bin on the bottom is a very inteesting design from Rober Bastanis, the maker of these speakers. It is open baffle...kinda....in a folded woodwork..like a "Z" labyrinth with the woofer mounted in the "/" of "Z", inside is a selected 18" woofer (!!!). this is the smallest "dipole" 18" woofer ever produced. I have no idea how they sound.

I am going round and round in circle again...

Suddenly the idea of going to a "better" open baffle appears in my mind and one brand keeps popping up:

Robert Bastanis - Atlas.

The agent/importer in Hong Kong happens to be a friend of mine but I have never considered buying them because of the highish price before...let's see if i can get some special deal with him or barter with my jewellery haha

I am so afraid of losing the 3D soundstage and transparency by going into horn.

If i am to do the Atlas, i would do my own 18" open baffle woofer, dipole all the way.
