I believe there are electronics levels that are more precise than the bubble ones.
Yes, levelling is of paramount important for parallel trackers, that’s why I just ordered a set of precision valves for my pneumatic table, which can maintain level within 0.13mm as compared to 1.3mm for the standard valve.

Not much really daiwok. All I want are two strip of slate, 23.5 x 2.5 inches, black in color preferably, to be placed
underneath my SP-10. The present base I have is short by half an inch so that half of the table is resting upon thin air!
This base is sand-filled, weighing a staggering 80 lbs and it came with a finely finished Corian top which did not
do much justice to its overkill design. The Corian pulls in every bit of resonance you can never think of………

Laser leveling is a very handy tool for coarse adjustments on racks, speakers and turntable base. For final adjustments on turntables, specifically the arc where the LP would be tracked, however, there seems no substitute for a good bubble. This is particularly important for unipivots as well as parallel trackers.

Thanks a lot!
Speaking of a shootout for Beethoven Violin Concerto. Perhaps it could be included as part of the big agenda for the many high hands visit to my den around Oct time. I am sure there will be interesting interpretations we all love to listen in the shootout but nowhere to be found in my collection.

I have zero idea they paired for the Emperor. Sorry what label was that on? Barenboim must be so much younger than Rubinstein for this great piece. I will look for a LP right away!
_____________________________________________________________
This is a RCA recording made in the seventies when Rubinstein was near the end of his career. The RCA box set LP of the whole Beethoven piano concertos is not that expensive.

For the Emperor concerto may I suggest another version by A. Rubinstein with Barenboim directing the London Philharmonic. There is a stately serenity that few can match, esp. in the Adagio and Rondo movement.

Bobui,
You might want to go back and revive the 古典音樂版本比拼擂台 thread, there are plenty of reviews/shootouts of most of the popular works. If you really enjoy comparing different versions of the same work, e.g. the most popular ever Vivaldi's four seasons, I can supply you with more than 150 different readings, enough for you to last the long boring summer vacation! Feel like going through 40 different readings of Beethoven's violin concerto?

Hey guys, I got fans! Two guys live not far from my den in DB called this morning after reading my weekend shootout on the Emperor. What they suggest regarding the report is that I should give out more details of my equipment set up and listing in greater depth of the difference between each interpretations.
Dont worry guys, I wont drag you into this meaningless and boring act. Not a chance! The only recommendation I think i can list here is if this kind of shootout means something to you, please do it at home without thinking you need to search for the "best" or "better" version amongst some of the big names you have possessed for a particular piece. Just enjoy the different feelings each offer is all I ever wanted. TRy not to pay too much attention to their prices and how rare of the record in bay watch! OK? Well, may be just a little won't harm!
In contrast for being so bobui, I am planning to do this kind of shootout one time a month or every two months. Yes, the Beethoven violin concerto is an interesting one. Just think about the many interpretations. Jolly! I know which one i like most already. Do you?
I'm just trying to enjoy the whole thing, Hi Fi and Music. "The whole is greater than the sum of its part. |

wee-bit of anti-skate. When it comes to fine-tuning a cartridge, it is more an art form
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps we shall look at how DJs handle their records?! Look so easy with thei bare hands forward - reverse, back track, fast track, jump track, speed play etc etc. Jumping up and down half drunk or stone/high on ice or something. Still never miss a beat! Oh, some may even like that "hit sticks" scenario! They are the high hands lor!
Anyway, my mind is still with the Adagio and the images from the film, the Kings speech. I think I am on drug too! |

icefox, thanks for encouraging. U know me better 朋友!
Weekend shootout The Emperor
Ok high hands, my comments is very personal and sugjextive, OK?. The shootout was basically aim only on side 2 of the recordings, the Adagio and Rondo. No particular reasons other than needed to complete before Mrs bobui back from Sunday Chapel.
My hero is Alfred Brendel. It just got me into the right mood on the Adagio. For romantic piece, I tend to be more ok with older recordings or even mono because it actually gives a kind of yester-year feel and remind me of old sweet moment with girls, sure u know what I mean. When I am falling into the mood, I just have no more brain cell to care about if the piano is a Yamaha or Steinway E!
For the Rondo, Alfred Brendel just carry on smoothly. Radu Lupu and Daniel Barenboim were very good recordings and allow the music to shine and feel of greater presence. Live like! When it comes to full orchestra and strong beat music, the quality of the recording seems more important to the overall effect! Unless if it comes in as a video or motion pictures.
Overall experience: Nice, very nice. Finally I got to remember what it is like to walk in a park after a night drinks with a girl under the snow!
My next shootout will be Chopin Piano Concerto No.1 E minor. Feel free to join or I'll just finish them all by myself. I think I have 6 versions at home.

___________________________________________________
Surprised really to learn that you use the same test record as I do for trackability tests. If the cartridge sails
through the torture tests without spluttering, one can be damn sure that it can track virtually anything.
For more enhanced presence, I would back off the tracking force by a tiny fraction while at the same time adding
a wee-bit of anti-skate. When it comes to fine-tuning a cartridge, it is more an art form that may sometimes defy
scientific reasoning.

Weekend shootout report, Denon DL-S1
--------------------------------------
Three areas DL-S1 good at-
One is the tracking ability. I tried it with the Hi Fi News test record and play the last track on side one (track 8), 300Hz, 18dB tone. Not a problem, very low level buzz!
Second is seperation. Surely greater details and much more refine than 103R.
Third is user friendly. I paid less than USD800.-
Three areas DL-S1 not good at-
One is mid range. Warm but not outstanding.
Second is the slightly softer sound than most modern cartridge. Surely not great for heavy metal and POP.
Third is price. Yes, thats right. Price! It is very very good value for less than USD800.- but it just doesnt look like a top of the line cartridge. Its has a plastic feel and the gold colour side panels makes it look emmmmmmm cheap. |

Whenever you are steady and in relax mode, play the Beethoven Adagio and extend it to the Rondo if you are up to the challendge. Very intense! There just isn't much room left for anything else other than flowing along with the music.
Just a moment ago when i was listening to Alfred Brendel on the Adagio, I just wish I was him! When I was listening to Radu Lupu, I also want to be him! Very high lor! |

Weekend shootout - Today, I will do nothing, absolutely nothing other than a shootout I so wanted for a long time with a helping hand from my newly acquired Denon DL-S1. No, just kidding! Still need to conduct the cooking and out cycling when the rain stop.
The Emperor, one of my much loved work from Mr. Beethoven. I will pay extra focus on the second movement, Adagio. Remember in the recent film, "The King's Speech" ending piece music after the king finished the public annoucement. Very touching, right?
