The Odyssey is not mine. The looks are better than performance. However, before the closure of Odyssey, they actually made a 12 inch version !!!! this is one I saw in Hong Kong ! Sorry for the crap photo .... the arm is sporting a Kiseki Agate cartridge - just beautiful !

BTW - they never sold the 12 inch version, it was a gift to the reseller @[email protected]

Count me in please! Tonearm is so much more fun than amps building for me. Especially when they can be so different in their bare fundemental design.

Long ago in a visit to Tom Fletcher of Notthingham (at time when he employed two other guys to built all his turntables at his back garden), he went on to explain his concpet on "bearing phasing" in tonearm design and where his design originated by showing me a few rice cooker look alike turntables in gold and grey. That was so much fun.

Meeting good amp designer to me is more like talking X+Y-Z to an engineer. A good turntable designer always tell interesting stroies on material reasonces frequency, vibrations control, povit positioning, sound travel, ac vs dc motor. etc.

Is this the model you trying to fix? Wow, even as a no follower for linear tracking, I must admit that this has got to be the most elegant looking linear tracking arm I have seen. Boodly clever design. Well, lets get it fix and make those rockport, ET, Souther and Goldmund like rusty robot buffalo walking on sand! This is a lot more cultural!

有文化 my friend ! Actually I should source a metal tube to replicate this gold one. I have the original tube but it is broken and I have Mandy the Magician making me an Ebony one like this !

Thanks 朋友, the problem is finding the right vendor as the hair line size holes cannot be blocked after electroplating. This is the part where we need some care and attention. Certainly the finish on those JADIS look top notch.

I am also thinking of cleaning up my Manley and having the front chrome finished.

Diawok,

Sure la! First time I am seeing a Dennesen. I do have one contact in China that handle plating for many of my amps chassis. Hope he still answer my call!

Fix an evening! Sunday night is family day. Home cooking and wine with Mrs bobui.

Saturday is possible but must fill in application to Mrs bobui for internal approval in advance. Weekdays, usually Ok, if no conference call with Zurich or Basel or crazy bankers calling. No, I dont make watches.

we need to talk !! I have this project sitting in my draw. Its a Dennesen tonearm which all the plating has come off. I need to do more polishing, but its getting close. Once done, I need your help to find some one reliable to plate this arm back to its former beauty like my friend'e Dennesen here. I have already commissioned Mandy the Magician in Philippines for his hand crafted Ebony wand 8^)

The fact that no manufactures of curved arms have one paticular big reason for being "bended" makes me believe that it was more of an industry fashion in the past.

No side tracking force, more like moving all passangers to one side of the boat and see if you would end up in the water when turning at speed.

To me its the look of the Alphason as a whole and the one piece armtube/headshell that attract me. Try looking at an S shape arm in a technics or JVC turntables from the 80's. Not very sexy lor.

>Frankly I often cannot help questioning the true merits of banana shaped arm tubes or for that matter, the S shape variations. Offset angle can be better achieved through a twisted head-shell without inflicting too much lateral imbalance upon the pivot bearings.

Higher mass? May be, but one can always achieve the same goal through the use of appropriate counter weight without much fuss, let alone the additional costs involved in curved tube manufacture. <
__________________________________________________

I have to agree with Limage on the subject! I have a FR64S, and the adjustment to the side weight (for lateral balance) makes a considerable different on the performance. So, I believe lateral balance is an important issue, but many arms, even vintage S and J, don’t even have the provision for this adjustment.

A straight arm tube should be much easier/cheaper to make, and also stronger in comparison. If higher mass is required, it is just a matter of using arm tubes of larger diameter or thicker walls! No wonder most of the modern day tonearms use straight arm tubes!

So, other than the look (if that is your preference), I really don’t see any advantage with S and J arms!

limage, good question, I asked myself a similar question after got hooked on the Alphason some years ago. My findings turn out to be a lot more than just one striaght answer: tracking angle, stylus draging force, increase mass/lower resonance frequency were all mentioned in S or curved tonearm manufactures as major considerations for getting "bended".

What regard as desirable tonearm to me must have the following features: simple in construction, good looking, very good looking, different (some sort of "house design"), healthy bearings, and maintanence free.

My cup tea: Alphason, Morch, Syrinx, naim, Wilson Benesch etc.

Not my cup of tea: Well tempered, ET, Rockport, Triplaner etc.

Icefox: to me, simple and subtle is fun. It allows my imagination flow.

Straight with bended headshell is only good for something.
