回覆 (1047): Not enough cartridges |
Desperation and desperate measures as I try and get more cartridges so over the weekend I decided to make my own !
I have some old Shure MM carts
I decided to strip them !
however I find there is a difference in profile and shape and size between the M75D and M55E
So I strip the M55E
a much bigger body and no need to adjust the profile
the fit looks good

Wher,
I can't help drooling at the sight of your Micro Seiki arsenal...Lovely.
Daiwok,
That 20mm f1.7 lens is a cracker of a lens. Nice pics.
Any more details about D&P Prototype phono? Tube based?
I'm intriqued.

Its a Lumix G 20mm F1.7 which I bought from Amazon US as it was cheaper. I normally shoot with Voigtlander and Leica M mount lenses with my GF-1, but this lens got my attention when I saw the quality of the photos. Its the first time I have bought a new lens in a very long time and also an autofocus one as well |

Thank you very much indeed for the info, but I think this Hammertone 301 is likely to hit somewhere near GBP 2800-3000 at the end of play and therefore totally out of range for a poor little amateur like myself.
daiwok,
... I believe after ordering 9 Schick Type G arms, it looks like another list for Schick after some earlier skepticism ...
I think the Schick & SPU Type A was truly amazing. Very very tempting. BTW, really nice photos, what was the lens again ? |

One combination which caught us all off guard was the Schick Arm with the Ortofon Type A SPU. Now this is a specially designed 12 inch arm for the Ortofon Type A SPU cartridges, nothing new as Ortofon made these in the past, however this combination with the Type A classic was not how we recall the SPU to sound. In the past I called the sound ToFu dessert, sweet and smooth. This time the sound was dynamic, lots of energy, refine and full of gusto !
I believe after ordering 9 Schick Type G arms, it looks like another list for Schick after some earlier skepticism.
The Schick Type A arm
potential orders are being discussed ........

The main listening combo was a plain vanilla Denon 103 with an output of approx 0.3mV. This cart was installed on the FR 12 and to balance matters out a MIDAS TOUCH was fitted between cart and arm. Lovely touch (pardon the pun) if I say so myself.

回覆 (1049): Phono Shoot Out |
Big thanks to Wher for hosting us yesterday. Certainly memorable occasion as always.
It was a good opportunity to hear how Derik and Panda's new DP Phono was performing against some of the competition. The rules are simple, any phono under HKD 20K was allowed to enter.
1. DP prototype
2. KAB
3. Softone
4. Aragon 47K
5. Clearaudio ref.
6. DPA 200S D
7. CHORD
8. EAR 834P
DP prototype did not embarrassed itself, indeed it was probably the quietest phono and also the one with the highest gain ! lots of options on loadings with great flexibility. I found the phono very refine and detail yet musical.I think this phono can challenge much more serious contenders on the market. This is a good honest product which you can seldom find in today's market. I am sure when it launched on the market, it will be very successful among vinyl lovers.
When the session ended, I asked Derik if I could have one that is LCR, can be loaded up to 1000K for my Decca carts, yet handle my LMC at 0.18mV and can take on a 20mV mono cart ! The Phono should also have equalisation adjustment for MONO, inverting of polarity and at least 3 inputs. Loading should by remote control as well as selection of inputs.
Obviously the answer from the Wicked Kong was to buy 3 phono's each dedicated to serve each purpose with true balance input, dedicated power supply for each channel in separate box to cut out RF and noise @[email protected] that means 6 boxes !
Derik was more practical - he said no problem but needs to have a think about the 20mV input !
now lets get started with the usual suspects ! ..........
Big welcome to Andrew who joined us today on this special occasion, Andrew is not only an audio nut case, a Lenco owner, but one of the main people in the organization of live Jazz in Hong Kong !

Geez !
Well I am happy just to have some kind of music at this moment ..... I have to make do with either Chicken sound with Chicken pre-amp as my pre-amps (yes plural) are all away on holidays. Mean time I can listen to my MONO system which is still being dialed in.
ok - no worries, I respect your tenacity in what you are achieving and total respect for those empty shelves in room tune. I will then use those 4 months to ensure that the SP 10 MK2 with air bearing is totally dialed in by then.
Given that we have to take this more seriously - Master Kong I need your black gate Power supply ! |

Why Autumn ?
_____________
The room in Sai Kung has taken me no less than 2 years to fully optimize.
Now I have to start everything from scratch once more. Speaker placement would normally take a month, followed by fine-tuning which is likely to take another two three months at the least.
Then, there is of course the room acoustics I have to figure out, controlling reflections mainly and trying different ways by which bass extension and definition can be best accomplished. Have you ever wondered why my present LP rack is left empty on both side columns? It helps to extend the bass by a few Hz!
It is rather optimistic, you see, if I could have my system singing in six months.

Assuming precise alignments are all done around the head-shell and no further adjustment is necessary swabbing cartridges, one has yet to fiddle with up to 9 more steps in succession,
matching the right wand
balance weight(s)
tracking force
anti-skate
VTA
lateral balance
cueing devise
cartridge loading
volume setting
before one is ready to start listening again. That's the kind of pleasure one may have rolling cartridges.
No wonder the situation is getting critical!

回覆 (1038): Not enough cartridges |
I hear among some brothers here that there is simply not enough cartridges to fullfil all the turntables and arms. I guess the difficulty is what is worth buying ?
I actually had a look at this recently ..... having acquired a second Denon DL-304 which shares the same body as the DL-S1
DENON - DL-S1 Phono Cartridge
The Denon DL-S1 moving coil phono cartridge is Denon's top of the line phono cartridge. It is designed and crafted to provide the pinnacle of performance, a bold statement that should not be taken lightly given Denon's track record of producing moving coil phono cartridges that have withstood the test of time and penchant for understating the engineering genius of their designs. The Denon DL-S1 cartridge offers musical accuracy that is exemplary, breathtaking and addictive. It is a standard by which other pinnacle and topflight cartridges will be compared to. If you are thinking of spending up to 100 times the cost of the Denon DL-S1 phono cartridge, it may be wise to reconsider. Musical satisfaction could be less expensive than you imagine. The special features and technical specifications enumerated below offer a thoughful glimpse of its capabilities.
Denon DL-S1 Moving Coil Cartridge Special Features
1. Newly developed ultra fine wire combining gold and 6N copper.
A newly developed ultra fine wire cmbining pure gold and 6N copper is used in the voltage generating coil. By combining the excellent qualities of gold and copper, the Denon DL-S1 is thus able to deliver uncompromised and unadorned pure and clean analog sound quality. Pure music - that's what you get with the Denon DL-S1 MC phono cartridge.
2. Stable, analog reproduction via superb tracing capability.
The use of a tapered cantilever, a non-magnetic coil bobbin, and a 0.07 mm micro stylus chip reduced the effective mass of its vibration system, lowered its mechanical impedance, and superbly improved its ability to trace the grooves in the record.
3. Elimination of unwanted vibrations with carefully selected materials.
A ceramic frame and a highly rigid aluminum body that has received a double alumite treatment eliminate unwanted vibrations within the cartridge.
3. Denon's unique 2-way dumping system.
The unique Denon two-way dumping system has been employed to suppress the tonal variations due to changes in room temperature and at the same time to obtain level frequency characteristics.
