Wow, this is as intriguing as it is inspiring!
Save and except the unipivot, however, the other two are more of experimental than practical value. Free vertical movements are likely to be at stake given the high level of friction resulting from the use of more bearings than necessary, especially the one close to the cartridge. Tracking force cannot be consistent under these conditions, I suppose.

Thanks for reminding me. Joachim Bung had some photos of my Thorens TD184 taken for his revision book which he is suppose to send me a copy.
Indeed this is a very good book - especially on idler wheels and the history of turntables, carts and arms of that period. |

You could be right, these are the spec. for the 2 models and they are quite similar, only that the Reference can take 3 arms where the Prestige only 2; very important for diawok :-)
======================================================
absolutely ! anyone serious about vinyl playback must have a turntable that can accommodate a minimum of 3 tonearms - hence coining the phrase by Thorens as "the Reference"
having got back to civilisation - I find I have more artillery on my desk ! another 12inch arm, more LP's, some new tweeters since I blown my last set. On my US trip I picked up about 30 MONO LPs and 2 more cartridges ^__^ |

This is the confidential US dealers price list for the Prestige in 1992. US$15,000 was the list price, and US$9,000 was the dealer cost

I really like this description in the fact sheet.
------
The PRESTIGE makes use of noble materials only, including a number of Gold plated parts. A true durable realisation of the PRESTIGE.

Technically speaking then, I guess both models represented state-of-the-art masterpieces from the House of Thorens.
The Reference, judging by its showy look, ought to be the model for the filthy rich and the prestige, the discerning.

I think the Reference was the flagship with a limited production run of around 100. A few years after that, they came up with the Prestige, which had a slightly lower price.
I still remember when the Reference came out, 阿二叔 went up to a TV program, probably歡樂今宵, to introduce it as the most expensive turntable in the world, costing around HK$70K. That was 1979!

tools for liposuction?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Far more advanced than liposuction Wesley - yesterday was a gastric sleeve using minimal invasive surgery (keyhole). However, history could be made this week as my US client is using an endoluminal / incesionless approach (no hole surgery) in New York with an all new device my company helped to create. We are already planning the next generation during my visit. |

Afraid not Wesley! The photo looks more like a piece of Dali Salvador art mixed with Kinbaku-bi (緊縛美) /Shibari (Art of Japanese Bondage). Pleasure is a funny thing, everyone gets off differently. A sex therapist once told me that many of her clients believe the "anticipation" before an orgasm can be far more exciting than the actual thing:-)
