回覆 (309): Valve testing AVO 160
Kong, here I capature one testing result of a total of eight I am testing for you.

All valves will be pre-heat for 2 mins on the heater and then approx. 5 mins on the anode before pressing for final readings.

So far, I have only tested one as show below and the testing result does look "good". I dont like the mirror getter turning white too. Its an indication of a small gas leak.

kind of a hybrid, very thin and light. I like the material, certainly more elastic and harder to damage.

回覆 (306): Denon DL-S1 and more
I need to buy one more! May be two more! Actually three more would just be enough lor!

Attached my new DL-S1 to the Alpahson over Easter break. Wahhhhhhh! It immediately sound so horrible Oh, yes, very bad indeed! There were plenty of distortion at record end (last two tracks). After spending hours fiddle with the alignment, there were still zero improvement.

What have I done to deserve this!!!

Took off the cartridge, Went back to the Alphason HR-100 instruction manual and start all over again with the set up. Opsss! What a silly mistake I have made lor! I mis-read the overhang by 5mm. 5 fxxking mm lor! It suppose to be 18mm but i mis-read as 13mm. Silly old man!

Now is singing beautifully. Compare with all the other mid price cartridges such as the Ortofon Rohmann, Jubliee, MC30, Vdh MCone, Dyna 20X. The Denon DL-S1 is by far the most neutral and detailed cartridge. The tracking ability is second to none lor!

The recommended tracking weight of 1.3g indicates how the suspension was so nicely design! Oh, dont be put off by its cheap price lor! Just make sure you have a good phono amp for the DL-S1. The output is a mere 0.14mv

I order from Zenwoodaudio in San Fran. This is a very nice Chinese guy living in the US and has this foam especially made. It's better than the UK and German foam I have seen and he said it will last longer as well. Cost is about USD 75 for full set if foams including the spiders. I am ordering some for me and Bobui, you want to groupon ?

BTW - I have managed to get very good sound from Lowther in the past including bass. My Coral Beta 8 had even better bass ! I still have these in Coral Beta enclosures if you are interested.

As a suspended TT (with a light subchassis ?), I don’t think the Heybrook is a good match to the heavy Terminator. I have read some positive comments on replacing springs by sorbothane pucks in suspended TTs like the Goldmund Studio or even Versa Dynamics. So you may want to experiment with this cheap modification!

This picture is lastest after the re-spray. See the glossy wooden frame! The arm is not fix onto the arm board. I am working on a nicer looking black colour arm board. This old one has too many drilled in it. No good lor!

This Heybrook TT2 does come with original power supply. Its probably not the best match for the Terminator. I am being forced to make use of whatever I have on hand la! CEO is making a lot of noise lately!

The other project I am working on is the Heybrook TT2. Heybrook TT2 was a mid price turntable from the 80s. Despite a much low asking price than the Alpahson, Voyd, the Source and the Linn LP12, the TT2 is nevertheless a solid build and heavier than the Linn. It also has a die cast sub-chassis and a three point suspension design.

What I am doing is to dismentle the TT2 and re-spray it.

Good! You have the correct size spanner? Right. Speaking of rebuild.......!

I have started rebuild and set up several turntables fo mine since late last night. Home early today to contionue working on the Alphason Sonata. Other than a very short testing on the Alphason when I first took home a while back. The Alphason has been pretty much in idle for the last 8 months.

What have I done tonight
Threw away the Linn LP12 and replace with the Alphason. Put in the newly acquired Alpahson HR100 arm and a fairly new Denon 103R. What a fxxking dfnice match! The Alphason combination has so much more weight and clarity than the Linn. The mid bass is a lot cleaner and precise.
The Alphason is a very heavy suspension turntable with a die cast sub-chassis. More than twice the weight of the Linn. The record clamp you see below is an Alphason original made with soild brass. You can imagine the weight the suspension can carry. The strong and heavy build translate it to a much more stable spin and isolation.

Anyone want a Linn! Let me know. I am seriously consider selling it! It comes with a Naim Armageddon.

Ass itching last night. Took away the Leak 3090 from the living room and relocate my beloved Lowther Acousta back to their respective corners.

So, how does it sound? Just forget about it la! Other than a slightly more transparent mid-range and treble on certain type of music such as Piano and Chamber music, the Lowther is way too weak for Classical and Rock. Lets not even go into Jazz lor!

Having said that, when Lowther is on a solo Piano, you can hear so much more details in the fingering!

Unless you are made to listen to only Chopin for a living, I suggest you skip the Lowther lor!

Please dont get wild and go free on looking out any US made amps in mono blocks or dual mono power supply thinking "all I have to do is to connect the two amps primaries in series" and the sun will shine, music can go loud! Not just yet! OK!

Dangerous: I have seen valve amp appyling half wave voltage doubler in its seconday by connecting two capacitors in series without two identical resistors to make sure the doubling voltage is shared evenly between the two caps. And this voltage doubler thing is very common amongst 845 or 211 amps because it enable the half voltage from the mid point in the series connected caps to be used for the driver stage without the need to put in an additional cow.

Not really! It happens a lot and most of the time you just dont realise its there!

Two coils connect in series or parallel! Take any large speakers with identical drive units. They are either connected in series share the voltage or parallel that divided the current between them.

Look closely to any valve amps, you see cows connected in series everywhere! Dont be surprise if you find out two small cows in a transistor amp that are connected in series to get the B+ and B- rails!
