the Schulz th315 was not sold as separate parts but rather housed in studio speaker directly sold to government studio and broadcast station. and orignally it was not meant for open baffle, but a rather large simple bass reflex cabinet, but my friend niko had the chance to compare and listen to both and he swears by open baffle |

see one picture of the crossover which is similar to mine (this pic is from my friend Niko's website).
I have the official circuit diagram and i hope someone can tell me which parts are speaker protection circuit so that whe i have them rebuilt i can leave that out.
The actual filter parts are rather simple from my limited knowledge when i looked at the diagram. The high pass is a simple first order with a cap and a resitor for level adjustment, and the low pass is a second order with an inductor in series and 50uf electrolytic caps parralleled.
I was told there is also some equalisation parts built in the network by one guru but i can't tell, may be someone smarter here can shed some lights? |

dear guys, thursday is best for me from afternoon til late as dinner. And also for Vash's loudness preference, it is better to be in the evening otherwise next door will complain haha. Last time was lucky..^^ But if we don't need to play VVeerry loud, then anytime is okay la.
I am usually free on Wednesday night, but this wednesday i will visit dr.king and learn a trick or two about measuring room acoustic and how to use RTA from him, or may be he can come along with you guys too? |

very interesting to find that my friend in Germany saw my saba baffle (well it was him who told me some great thing about the saba coax) and did something similar with rarer Siemens 25cm fullrange and self-made coaxial. You can see he also has the same Schulz th315 coaxial driver baffle with 18" woofer as I do, it was also him (his name is Niko) who shared with me generously his experience. The Schulz combo is currently Niko's reference i think |

And those are not "bed mattress" on the back in case one suspected that my studio is built inside a mattress factory...haha. Those are my feeble attempt to fight early room reflection and echo with low budget and diy spirit. They are actually 2" high density acoustic fibre glass pad bought from Mongkok Butt Street, each piece is 2 feet x 4 feet x 2 inches and cost about $35/pc. you can expose the fibre glass to air as they are absolutely bad for your lung, so i made some fabric bags to put them in. But i picked the wrong fabric pattern this time and i thought they look rather ugly and girly. Anyway, will try to make some new one in the future....

Vash and rcwy,
I have just completed my second baffle (this one is supposed to be my main baffle, the saba one was an experiment out of the blue but the result surprised me) with a 18" woofer dipole driven by active crossover at 110 hz.
The driver on the top are the famous and rare east german recording studio monitor used in the GDR era back in around 1960-1980s and was the professional standard in the main and majority studio and broadcast monitoring. They are the Schulz TH315/1, 12" coaxial with 5 inch aluminium dome tweeter with hugh alnico magnet. There is a crossover around the magnet which is rather complicated and consisting of many old caps. I feel this need some upgrade especially those electrolytic caps on the low pass filter. This is the second pair i have owned, the last pair i had was sold to a retired german recording engineer who also told me Mr. Neumann, the famous microphone maker, also uses Schulz coaxial as one of his tools in design.
The 18" woofer dipole use the super value Celestion 18" with 97db sensitivity.
For the schulz, i use the same old Eico HF-81, and for the low, i have an tripath based pop-pulse with 70w into 4ohm. Active crossover is the very neutral sounding if not exotic DBX brand 2-way active.
This is the first time ever in my life dealing with active crossover. A lot of headache fine tuning the xover frequency and output level of top and bottom.
I spent the whole afternoon at my studio today. This new baffle surely can play up to "vash's loundess standard" i feel. But i am still having a hard time fighting with the room acoustic of my rather squarish room. Anyway, i thought i post some pictures here to share.
Vash and rcwy, time to come over again, perhaps my dear Dr. King can come along and give me a tip or two on room treatment. It is a devil i want to kill.

Are the two caps in silver color really silver inside the Audio Note DAC Zero?
-----------------------
John
I did not open the chassis of my DAC. This photo was grabbed from the internet. Obviously, it is not a DAC-ZERO :-)
I am still searching the photo inside the chassic of my DAC.
I don't think there is any Jensen Silver capacitors inside my DAC as I told before, two silver Jensen capacitors will cost several thousand Hong Kong dollars already.

There is still a hitch unnoticed somewhere and I have the strong feeling that bit rate and over-sampling may not be the only key to recover the highest fidelity from the master files.
Remember the days when CD was first introduced in the early 80’s with its shattering spec on paper, it took almost 20 years of refinement before the promises of quality could be gradually realized. Hopefully with that much proven experience in digital technology now, it won’t take engineers another 20 years for high definition audio to become truly available to the general public at reasonable costs.

Wadia 581 > Kondo M7 > Chord 4000 > Kharma CE3.2
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wadia 581 has already been changed to Audio Transport 2 + Chord DAC64
The sound is very clean, with high analytical power, open and smooth.
We have test CAS too by connect a Macbook directly to Chord 64 and increase buffer. The setup is only about 80% of CD when playing high resolution file. |

下午托部 Audio Note 番黎試,為 CAS 鋪路。可惜最高只達 24 bit/96k,但勁靚聲,與 Ensemble 隻抽,難分難解。是關一個美艷、一個嬌俏,一時三刻無法取捨。
