I don't know how long my SP-10 is going to work with the original speed control chip, unless mdlover is going to make an updated and simpler control unit for us.

still feeling itchy, I decided to wire one of my favourite all time carts - this is the 300B of carts !

super long connectors at the back and only 2 of them ! Here's hwo to wire them, yep double up !

The beauty of this cart is that it as designed for the Japanese AM radio stations which wanted to play Stereo LP's through the AM radio. This cart is special as it has vertical compliance so you play both Stereo and Mono records with its 0.7mil stylus. The output is high as well 3.0mV and its MC !!! Perfect for my phono. Also I don't need to worry if the boss decides to play a normal record and the stylus does not drag through the grooves like a non vertical compliance MONO cart.

If you guys really want to hear the true beauty of MONO even through Stereo recordings, want to hear magical vocals I recommend this cart ^__*

First up is my new Miyajima lab Kotetu, MONO MC with no Vertical compliance so a pure MONO, but with 0.7mil stylus.

Great tone and everything sounds much better on MONO records.

However, my MM phono just does not have enough gain and its not really doing the cart justice which I know it can do since I heard it recently in Brussels and it was mind blowing !

Have you requested yours from Santa yet ?

Yet, in fact long time go, I almost get it as Santa indeed provided with me a tracking no. in a past X'mas. Unfortunately, some time later after that X'mas, I received a hand-written notes in my mail box saying "Large chimney NOT FOUND, delivery ABORT!"

I learned my lesson, request something smaller before I could afford a house like Limage's ^__*!!!

I've always suspected that cartridge trackability on a linear tracking arm would invariably suffer because the arm relies basically on the cantilever to move its bulky body across the record. The tremendous mass of the arm along with its overwhelming inertia may easily overload a delicate cantilever with compliance upwards of 15. Kong's A90 helped to confirm this a few weeks ago.

I guess cartridges with much stiffer cantilevers would find this Hercules task a little easier.

I agree ! these machines come up about twice a year, I tried to bod for one in the past and missed out. This one in particular is a good buy as it comes with the tracking record and to be honest, if I was more well behaved this year, I would have asked SANTA. These are professional cartridge testing machines to ensure tractability. Lucky I have 6 linear tracking arms so this machine is really for those who do not have linear tracking. However I was surprised when Limage said that my linear tracking arm was not tracking properly @[email protected] I found this rather disturbing .........

the SPU is the Tannoy sound of cartridges to me
________________________________________

I would have thought battleships like the SPU, or EMT for that matter, would sound overwhelmingly full-bodied and musical so that the delicacies of detail and nuance would be at stake. Yes, you are right daiwok, it must be the resonant coloration of the original SPU along with ear soothing smoothness that has captivated the hearts of the Japanese.

The pity is, I don't have that 三盤、六臂、十二頭。 The Audiocraft can only take one cartridge at a time and despite the fact that I do have a dozen arm tubes of all sizes, the amount of setting-up work involved just puts me off.

SPU sound can be therapeutic, it has a great smoothness in the sound and a bloated bass which I guess is more for Jazz lovers. I believe this sound is also to do with not just the generator but also the choice of styli used on the SPU which is actually quite big for modern day cartridges. (Mine however has a Paratrace Styllus).

However the SPU sound should be confused on the older sound and the modern SPU. The modern day SPU is leaner while I find the older SPU more fatter or has more body. Part of the signature of the SPU sound is generated from the legendary body resonating away which gives it its signature look and sound. The older bodies were cast from metal and made from Bakerlite while the new bodies are now made from lacquered wood finished by the Japanese. Those who have dared to open up an SPU will find that the SPU short comings are also due to the wires connecting from the cartridge pin to the 4 pins at the back, inside it is basically hollow. The SPU is basically like any other cartridge with a big outer body, some prefer listening to the SPU naked ie SPU - N these sound more open and lighter, but the signature of the sound does not change, its smooth as silk and super relaxing. You can say its not a high end cart or reflection of true projection of music, but what it ? the SPU is the Tannoy sound of cartridges to me.

On reflection on your comment Limage on EMT and Decca V, I have a couple of Decca London carts, I cannot commetn on EMT but Decca London have another kind of signature sound. Its is explosive in the dynamics sense. "LIVE" is what comes to mind. Again not the most refine sound, but nothing comes close when you talk about realism in certain music. The Decca reminds me of the Lowther speakers.

If you wish to hear these carts in your system, I can certain arrange ^__*

The SPUs have their charisma finding particular affection with Japanese audiophiles. I know of very few users in HK.

I have not in fact the chance to listen to one at my own place. The last time I listened to the SPU was at an audio dealer whose set up wasn't doing justice to anything. I would have thought the SPU sounding very much like the EMT or Decca V.

The 85th Anniversary and 90th Anniversary SPU are suppose to be limited edition .........so this confusing if they are available as a collection. The 90th Anniversary is available in Japan still. I heard this 90th edition recently on my MiWi arm at Brussels very impressive and very un SPU like sound, more dynamic and less bloated and slow. I have a SPU Synergy which I am told is the same as the 85th Anniversary ..... I cannot tell to be honest.

I have to admit the new SPU Xpression looks weird ! unless it sounds stunning, I cannot see myself breaking the bank

Now that the 400 A90s are all gone, I suppose they need to have a new model to take up the role as the flagship ;-)

While the Xpression has the same motor as the A90, I am a bit surprised that it still employs the SLM technology for the shell, which, as I understand, was the main cause of the slow supply of the A90. Maybe there are more SLM machines around now!
