dearabbey hing,
when you said "For project 25 I think it is wrong for him to put in the 10u cap and make the 2nd order LPF", do you mean i should try just keep the 4mH coil, and take away the 10uf caps? a more gentle cut off slope for the low drivers?
Yes i was not feeling very confortable, psychologically seeing lampizator's using so many parts in his projects. In fact for a long time that i hve lived with the saba combo before i came across lampizator's site, i just connect coax+fr on baffle in parallel without any crossover at all...and i think that still sounds very nice. Only when i start to bring in one extra 10" to help the bass a bit in my narrow baffle and in a much larger environment, i can hear a serious overlapping of mid-frequency and that's why i started to bring in the Lampizator's idea. Let me try your suggestion tonight |

hi dear abby bros,
So far the sound of my baffle following project 25' idea is very good, despite the fact that since i don't hvae the high pass network to cut off the lower part of the coaxial's maincone and cone resonance starts to come in and can't play very loud. I guess it was around 110hz. If i have had followed exactly what Lampizator did, it would be much safer for the coaxial's maincone to work when we need to crank up the volume. You can hear some "dee dee" sound whne you go near and behind the baffle.
my next project is using active crossover. This does not hvae to be expensive and no point to buy those exotic highend one. There are some companies thaat produce activer crossover for professional use and they are proven designs. I have been checking out info and feedback on diy forum of aka. Klisch, Altec etc and certain names always are recommended: dbx, rane, ashley and these are definitely not expensive unit. Say a 3-way crossover cost under HK$2000 in shamshuipo brand new, and this is probably cheaper than buying premium boutique capacitor/resistor/coil for a crossover, and i swear by activer crossover's superior sound.
I can't imagine how saba would perform if put together with 18" woofer in active crossover. My next project.
The only trick: how to integrate them nicely. Would be ideal if I konw how to use real time analyser to check on the frequency curve so that i can adjust the loudness of high/low amp.... |

Glad you mentioned this lampizator guy. I had previously communicated with him and shared our Music Angel 845 modification experience. I happened to have done my modification before I came to notice of his site. It also happened that his choice of component values/working point settings are very much similar to my ideas.
For a year or so I have no visited his site again. Promoted by your post I had looked into it again. All I can say he is crazier than I am. As I am planning my retirement I hope I can spend as much time and do many more projects (but not to his degree).
I also looked into project 25 as your suggested.
The one thing I found identification in him is he has gone back to basics, and he no longer believes in premium grade components. Personally I think this is the only way to reach audio nirvana. In xo building I am more and more convinced (by numerous experiments) that only first order (single component frequency divider) works best. For project 25 I think it is wrong for him to put in the 10u cap and make the 2nd order LPF. If you were to do this project, try this point for yourself and determine which works better. You must need the 4mH inductor. For the mid part, I think the cap size could be reduced to 30u. So you can try between 90u and 30u and use your ears to determine which value is best. Would love to hear your results. Cheers.

Vash,
My saba baffle is partly inspired by this diy guru living in poland
http://www.lampizator.eu/SPEAKERS/PROJECTS/Speaker%20projects.html
you can see from the web his 25 projects in the last 10 years. You can see how he evolved from expensive box speakers using some of the most expensive drive units like ATC, audionote etc to finally cheapy SABA green cone and tweeters.
The crossover values of my set up is also inspired by him, see project 25, except that i did not put a low cut network for the main 10" coax as i did not have the parts on hand.

oh what a pity, i have the charlize2 too and i wanted to demonstrate how good it can drive my baffle to Vash and rcwy but we did not have all the time to do it. I could give up so many amps just to keep the charlize2, but matching with sensitive speakers with above 92db at least is the condition.

I'd love to join too : )
Hi Welborne, nice to see you here!
Finally got the Charlize 2 but acidentally shorted one of the ouputs to ground last week and it went belly up right away : (
Need to get a new one.....or, anyone knows where I could find a TA2020 chip, and wondered if those made in Korea are better....Thanks.
Later! |

Vash,
Thanks for your very generous words. it is good to have a few trained and polished ears to come to my little world to give criticism and comments. I love that.
I am very glad that you and rcwy seems to like my set up though I am awared of the room for improvement especially in the bass department.
May be next time when you come again, i can demonstrate my Schulz 12" coax th315 to you too, hopefully already augmented with a 18" woofer with active x/over. |

The performance is stunning, linear, full of body, texture without any colouration from box type speaker....very closed to a planar speaker. I think it may benefit more if moving the speakers a few inch forwards to listening postion.
Welborne, thanks for your hospitality and special thanks to rcwy brings us a special guest, a legendary audiophile from Leak gang, Philip Lee !! |

Off topic a little, think before you buy a Philxxx LCD TV (End)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Broadxxx sent a new one yesterday and it works flawlessly up to now.
QC of Philips is poor (probably it's the low end Europe one)!
The salesman's attitude was good when I bought it but bad and impolite when I asked for my replacement!
