daiwok, just caught an hour for an audition to the tomahawk today. It is a horrible experience for me. It makes the sound more airly, bass more refine and extended......and so much more. Yes, and it is very sensitive as well owing to it's light weight design, less air pressure is needed making it cannot easily to handle a vinyl with some fine dust.

I will try it with David's midas touch later. It should be fun !

BTW - with the Tomahawk your air pressure can be reduced further ! and expect to hear another level ^__^

My Tomahawk finally installed. It's low profile design need much serious adjustment but it is fun ! The 'Gettai' of Tomahawk with the T3pro sounds 'Henshin' to another branded of tonearm !

Daiwok, is it good to has one or two drops of light mass oil or even a slim telfon sheet to fill the gap between the 'two aluminium' blocks of Tomahawk ? What'd you think ?

回覆 (265): Vinyl is forever - CD is not !
This was posted by GP49 on Lenco Heaven.

When the Compact Disc was announced, it was thought by many to be the greatest thing since Creation, sliced bread and the discovery of chocolate.  Conductor Herbert von Karajan proclaimed, "All else is gaslight."  Great for him, as he pressured his record company into paying him to re-record his repertoire for the new medium.

"Perfect Sound Forever" was one of the other slogans used to tout the Compact Disc.  But fairly quickly the "Perfect Sound" was challenged and found not to be so.  And not so quickly but nevertheless inexorably, the "Forever" has fallen on doubt.

A currently-running thread on a classical music newsgroup concerns what looks to be corrosive destruction of the metallic layer in Compact Discs.  This is different from the already-known bronzing of that layer.  The visible manifestation is deteriorated spots, some black and opaque, ranging to patches that have gone clear and transparent, as though the metallic layer has completely decayed to where it's GONE.

The effect seems to be worst on Compact Discs made in Europe by Philips (parent company of "Gaslight" Karajan's recording company Deutsche Grammophon).  The CD numbered 415 129-2 is a disc of Handel's music conducted by Trevor Pinnock on DG, issued in 1990.  Decca CDs, many of which were pressed by Philips in its European plants, also suffer.

I'm thinking the cause could be oxidation, from pinholes or thin spots in the lacquer coating that is supposed to "seal" the thin metallic layer from the air.

Meanwhile, conventional gramophone records, whether shellac 78s or vinyl LPs, continue to be playable, and will as long as the equipment to do so remains available and there are people like those here at Lenco Heaven who have faith in the format.

>friction readings have not been given….<
__________________________________________

That is an interesting point! It seems like none of the modern day tonearms manufacturers publish spec. about bearing friction!

I had a quick look at the Copperhead's manual, it seems like it is primarily a unipivot bearing, but with a 2nd bearing (something like a tip top on a sapphire plate) for stabilizing the azimuth. Yes, I would think this 2nd bearing would add some friction. The magnetic azimuth stabilizing system on the Phantom arm maybe a more clever design, but it probably would still add some friction (at least in the horizontal plane), since the arm need to guide/move the magnetic system in operation.

Looks like both of these arms' designers were willing to trade a bit higher horizontal friction for the sake of stabilizing their unipivot design!

The Terminator T3pro I am using requires a very small and low pressure pump which you can find in Goldfish Street. In fact the pump is in the living room which I am not sure if you noticed it. I am now planning a titanium wand and possibly a titanium slider which will reduce the over weight even further and take the pressure to ridiculously low levels.

Certainly if you have conduits planned for CAS you might as well use these and have a pump socket ready as well, if you do not use an air bearing arm, you can use the hose to blow away some of that dust ! ^__*

One thing that the air bearing arm does require which will eat up some space is a surge tank. This does not have to be big, but may be a shoe box size. I also have a mini stank just before entry into the arm and is tied up to my hi fi rack and hidden away from view.

Getting the biggest bang per buck is always the name of the game given today's sky high prices ! ^__^

Well, I'll keep that in mind. How about a pump room underground a hundred feet off, wouldn't it suffice?

On the other hand, I am also looking at what the latest technology has to offer on computer as source.

I like to keep both directions going and hopefully be still getting biggest bang for the buck.
