回覆 (248): A90- Copperhead

I have run through the design of the Copperhead through the link. The arm is terribly complicated to start with and I don't feel too comfortable with the idea of having more bearings than necessary to get things going. BTW, friction readings have not been given and by intelligent guesses, it is unlikely to be anything less than 30 mg, a figure which can only be called mediocre.

Of course, pivots are but one of the many considerations affecting the final performance and yet the more complicated the design, the more chances of mistakes there exists.

jaspert,

Wow, this is horribly tempting, so much so that I'll be hard put not to consider this one-of-a-kind combination. The two seem to be made for each other in their lethal look!

Well, let me think about it. Four grands US are big money. My present set up only cost me US 800 in the beginning of time, you see.........

The only worry I have over the A90 is its output level. Ortofons, SPUs excepting, are usually underwhelming in their output, typically 0.05 mV, whereas the Kiseki is boasting a figure of 0.4 mV which is 8 times as much. I cannot remember the test parameters as different criteria definitely lead to very different results.

I've just placed my order for the Ortofon A90. The world should be progressing, I guess, so will be the cartridges!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You really would think so, but our recent listening of the ESL57 will make us rethink. Certainly my experimentation with idler wheel turntables and modification of the Denon cartridges which is already like 45 years old makes you wonder. I don't think cartridge building has really dramatically improved with the exception of stylus profile but even that has been stagnant in the last 10 years. What we might have seen in some areas of improvements is pre-amps, phono stages and possibly some tonearms - other than that I have yet been blown away by recent new stuff on the market.

I had used two SL15 with elliptical stylus at a time when the term "Mark II" was not yet popular. With the original SL15, there was a distinctive peak at over 10k which imparted a rather euphonic presence that impelled listening fatigue easily.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will look out for this peak. My guess that it could be the stylus profile causing this.

They were replaced by ADC 26 and XLM in my system eventually.

Limage were you referring to this one ? ......

SL15 II

The SL15 and SL15E gained rapid acceptance, evolving through to mark II versions. Changes appear to have been made to the coil design. There is a reduction of output voltage to 0.015mV/ (cm/sec) and an increase in coil resistance to 2.5 Ohm. The SL15 II was fitted with a 15um conical stylus. There also appears to have been a change in the stylus rake angle to 20 degree. The 2-15K transformers were replaced with the STM-72, offering a step up ratio of 100 (40dB).

A ‘flip down’ stylus guard was fitted to the Mark II version of the SL15. This feature was retained on all subsequent designs up the MC30 II. The stylus guard is easily removed should there be concern over its presence causing unwanted audio resonances.

When you have Denon 103, you could safely forget the Ortofon SL15 which is not quite in the same league. It has none of the definition of the SPU either.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are we talking about the same cart ? this cart is from 1968 a very rare beast ..... very low gain, in fact a special SUT was made at the time for this cart. It was the flagship movement for Ortofon............

The S 15 series of cartridges were designed in the mid ‘60s and were based on the SPU. There were two versions: the S 15-T with an integral transformer, weighing 18.5g; and the ‘lightweight’ version without transformer, the SL 15, weighing 7g.

Either version could be supplied fitted with a 17um conical stylus. To distinguish these versions from those fitted with 17um x 8um elliptical styli, the latter would later have the suffix ‘E’ attached to their designation. When fitted into the Ortofon type G headshell, (and confusingly called the S-15MT), the total mass of the S-15MT combination was 29.5g. This total mass could well have been chosen deliberately, if such a combination was intended for broadcast use. Assuming that SPU-Gs were already in use and tracking at 4g (not unusual at the time to ensure secure tracking), then in the event of an emergency failure, direct replacement of the SPU-G with an S-15MT would allow the latter to track at a recommended 1.5g.

Both the S15-T and SL15 had improved channel separation and compliance figures over that of the SPU. When introduced they were both more expensive than the SPU.

Limage you are absolutely right ! Ortofon is a much older cartridge company than Denon.

I recently got hold of a Ortofon SL-15, it is a stereo cart especially made to replace the SPU and designed for the broadcasting, I have yet mounted or tried this out yet.

I would have thought that Ortofon ought to be the oldest company making cartridges. Denon might be older as a company, but she was more likely to be making bombs back then in stead of cartridges.
