回覆 (69): Slate Idler Wheel Turntables Workshop!!! |
Good stuff....That looks much more fun than reading up various tutorial on Lenco Heaven and doing it in isolation Downunder...
Is that one the Ming Dynasty slate? He seems quite possessive of it..;)

回覆 (68): Slate Idler Wheel Turntables Workshop!!! |
Yesterday, it was an eventful Sunday. Thanks to the endless dedication and efforts of our Magic Hands, a.k.a daiwok 超人, a bunch of analogue freaks getting together in a 180 degree sea-view conference room rolling up sleeves for a super hands-on workshop on Slate & Lenco.
There was a lot of laughter along with sweat & blood of a selected lucky few who could get their hands on a piece of slate. To me this is a truly worthwhile and informative session on many things idler wheel and other associated black magics on analogue.
These are the sort of events that adds the well-needed color for our hobby. Thanks Magic Hands, keep the cool stuff coming!
Here is some clips to share. May be Limage could host a session on Jelly Fish in the not too distant future.

回覆 (67): Daixxconn factory |
>>>And whoever polished my piece of slate at the mystery sweat factory I will buy you a drink or two when I next hit town. ;)
Yes, you may need to buy some drinks but only for the security, you have to do it (polishing) yourself in this great factory !

Any jump in the factory after the tears and sweat?

It could happen this weekend if some of those cannot take it @[email protected], no toilet, no food, no water, no tools - just use fingers and finger nails for final polishing !!! ~___~ |

I've been once in this mystery factory for just a few hours in a Saturday morning, and it's true, no toilet and no drinks ! Only sweat ( polishing ) and tears ( happiness ).......

While pushing oil at my office warehouse with all the slate and no lunch, I had to lock all windows and doors which could only be opened with finger recognition to stop Sing and Scallywag jumping out and stealing the headline from Foxxconn @[email protected] |

The test I mentioned was meant to be carried out on the same TT with the objective of showing the different among of stylus drag during low and high modulation passages. It was not meant to be a comparason between BD, ID and DD.
Actually we have discussed in details the pros and cons of the different drive systems, at least in theory, in a nother thread earlier :-)

回覆 (47): Idler Wheel Turntables |
Limage has his point as this not quite the proof of the pudding as quality of the bearing, the inertia of the platter etc all come into play. What is more interesting is what do your ears actually hear and this is all about preference. With motors which have direct drive or idler wheels with more direct contact, the organic energy you get, I personally do not find in nearly all belt drives. I agree with Limage that a belt driven platter with fly wheel and large motor does give a very good sound, but to me it is still not close. The reason is if you look at the power of the motor of the direct drive and idler wheel the belt drive motors are still very very small in power and torque. What is harder to achieve on idler wheels if the total darkness that the very belt drives can achieve, but with the right engineering behind the plinth and motor isolation, I believe the idler / direct drive can come very close or dare I say match this level of darkness.
I have 3 projects this year, 2 idler drives and a direct drive which will be housed in a Slate plinth. This project has taken me 12 months yet I am still not finished. When it is ready, I will be more than happy to share this with those who wish to hear a fair contest.
The first stop might just have to be the Limage den. ^__* |
